Your Host

Welcome to the “My Amazing Yukon Life” Podcast

Hello, I’m Daniel Halen and I’ve had the good fortune of exploring vast amounts of this amazing Yukon landscape for nearly 30 years. I’ve hiked, paddled, biked, skied and traversed through some of the most remote parts of Northern Canada, all the while having candid conversations with people who have the answers to the questions that you, the listener, want to know about.

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions below, then you’re in the right place.

  1. Should I be insulted or flattered when someone calls me a Cheechako, or Sourdough?
  2. Is it true that in “The Land of the Midnight Sun”, the sun never really goes down?
  3. Can I dip a pan in just about any Yukon creek and expect to find gold?
  4. Does the winter temperature in Yukon really go down to -72 degrees?
  5. Am I likely to run into a Grizzly bear, Moose, Wolf, Wolverine, Caribou or any wildlife whatsoever when I’m travelling in the Yukon wilderness?
  6. What exactly is a Sourtoe Cocktail and why would anyone drink that?
  7. Do people still travel by dogsled, snowshoes, skis and snowmobile?
  8. Is it true that parachutes are recommended over bug dope, because the bugs are so big they can pick you up and drop you?
  9. Is an Inukshik actually like a road sign used for directions on the barren tundra?
  10. What inventions, businesses, stories, arts and crafts, owe their origins to the creativity and perseverance of the Yukon people?

I hope you enjoy listening to the personal stories in the search for “Yukon Gold”, as could only be told by the many people I’ve been fortunate enough to cross paths with.

May you find humour and inspiration in each episode, and perhaps a little “life lesson” nugget in the bottom of your gold pan.
